Anti-icing solutions for vessels
Ice loads on a ship hull affect the safety of the hull structure and the ship manoeuvring performance in ice-covered regions. The ice loading process has a clear stochastic nature, due to variations in the ice conditions and in the icebreaking processes of ships. SEDNA will use numerical simulation tools to study the different characteristics of various ice types and icebreaking processes to be used for prediction of the probabilistic ice loads on the studied sea areas.
On the basis of this analysis and using nature inspired approaches, SEDNA will develop anti-icing engineering solutions to reduce the impact of ice formation on vessel stability, safety equipment and on-board safety.
In particular, SEDNA will deliver:
- The production & characterisation of adherent, robust and efficient ice-phobic coatings including structural, composition, adhesion, hardness, wear, abrasion, UV, biofouling and corrosion resistant testing, laboratory ice-phobicity & de-icing assessments: nanocomposite coatings; biomimetic anti-icing coatings; energy efficient electro-thermal coatings.
- Smart and multifunctional coatings with integrated anti-icing/de-icing capabilities.
- Production and optimisation of large area prototypes anti-icing/de-icing coatings.
- Prototypes of optimised of large area anti-icing/de-icing coatings for field trials.
